Message from the Chairman: MDC is almost here!

By: Mike Baskey, DMTF Chair

The fifth annual Management Developers Conference (MDC) is right around the corner. Though MDC is not a DMTF-hosted event, it offers an opportunity to showcase the technologies we are all working on. The conference covers a broad spectrum of initiatives and topics of current interest, making it a premier educational event in regards to the collective thinking of our organization.

This year’s conference is another opportunity for attendees to learn about the current activities of other DMTF members and to learn from these industry experts. Everyone is aware of the current economic challenges we face in traveling; MDC maximizes the value of this week to give people the most bang for their buck.

This year DMTF will hold its regular face-to-face meeting in Santa Clara, Calif., before the conference, along with a joint meeting of the Technical Committee to improve the organization’s synergy. MDC will once again offer numerous educational opportunities for attendees, including a Demo Area where they can meet and interact with industry experts developing and implementing various standards-based management technologies. Cloud computing is a hot topic within DMTF this year, including the work of the Open Cloud Standards Incubator. MDC will offer several opportunities to learn about DMTF’s work in this space. Be sure to catch the presentation on Cloud Computing as well as the session from General Dynamics that offers an outside view of the challenges surrounding virtualization.

MDC features a full agenda, ensuring all attendees are able to find something of interest. Some popular areas covered this year include:

  • DMTF Management Initiatives – DASH, SMASH, VMAN, SMI-S
  • Virtualization and Cloud Computing
  • Implementing DMTF Standards and Profiles
  • Training: MDC University is an intense one day training session for engineers and program/product managers

Each year new sessions and focuses are added to the conference agenda. Below are a few examples of some of the new and less traditional sessions to explore:

  • Energy management
  • Smart cards and fingerprint readers
  • Mobile phones

We look forward to an exciting conference and encourage all of you to join us in Santa Clara, Calif., on November 16-19, 2009. Come together to share ideas, best practices, challenges and more. This is a great chance for members to connect with one another as well as learn about the various Forums you can join. There is still time to register for this event. We hope to see you there!
